The Biostone Plus filter reduces chlorine, bad taste, giardia & other microorganisms, heavy metals and other contaminants. The "Plus" refers to the recent re-engineering of the filter to additionally remove chloramines (cancer-causing by-products of chlorination). How do I know when my filter needs to be replaced?
All machines that use this filter have either a digital numeric readout or a progressive bar indicator. When the numeric readout reaches 9999 (or 999 on 3-digit readouts) or if all of the filter bars are lit up, generally a filter light will begin to blink letting you know that you've reached the maximum capacity of the filter. This can also be accompanied by the ionizer playing a constant tune. This can happen anywhere between 6 to 12 months, depending on the amount of water your family uses. When that occurs, it's time to change the filter. Also, you should change the filter at least every 12 months, whether the filter use light is blinking or not.
It has been two years since I changed my filter last, but I don't use the machine that often. Do I still need to change the filter?
Yes. Even though you may only be using the water ionizer once in a while, the filter media and housing is filled with water. The integrity of the internal filter media will begin to diminish over time, and the inside of the filter will degrade. Therefore, it is imperative that you change your filter at least once every 12 months.
Is this the same Biostone Plus filter that has been sold for years?
No. Although the filter goes by the familiar name of "Biostone Plus", it is not the same filter that has been sold since 2008. The original Biostone Plus filter was discontinued, and this new version of the filter was launched in summer of 2014. The original Biostone Plus filter was made with "centaur carbon" which, as many of you will remember, made the Biostone Plus filter very heavy (nearly two and a half pounds dry). The new version of the Biostone Plus filter is much more lightweight (weighing less than a pound), and has a new outer body style (the new "UltraWater" filter body). We've been told that its lack of weight is thanks to the newest water filtration technology that AlkaViva claims has more adsorption power compared to the previous heavier version.
How do I install the adapter?
After removing your old filter and adapter, insert the filter with the included adapter into the spring-loaded baseplate, and then lean the filter inward so that it connect to the top filter connection.
Does this filter remove fluoride?
Fluoride is one of the hardest contaminants to remove from drinking water, and requires its own very specific media for removal. There just wasn't enough room inside the regular UltraWater filters to fit the fluoride media as well as the other media. Therefore, AlkaViva created an UltraWater Fluoride-Aresnic Shield, which is an internal filter that can be used in conjunction with the regular UltraWater filter, in machines that have two filters. If you have an Athena, you would purchase the Fluoride-Arsenic Shield for the Athena, and there is another Fluoride-Arsenic Shield for the Vesta (the Vesta has its own filter size). If your ionizer has only one filter, then you would use the AlkaViva UltraWater filter as the main filter in your water ionizer, and then add the external fluoride-aresnic pre-filter between your water source and your ionizer.

The new version is much lighter than the previous one, but the water tastes fine so I guess its working.Would you recommend this product to a friend? Definitely
